Als Kind Schüler des Malers Tennstedt (Berliner Kunstschule), verdingt sich bereits mit fünfzehn Jahren (nach dem Suizid des Vaters) bei einer Berliner Zeitung als Karikaturist, ab 1929 Theater- und Sportzeichnungen für das „12-Uhr Blatt“ (sign. mit V. Weiß).
1935 als Jude Berufsverbot und Emigration über Budapest sowie die CSSR nach London, 1936 britische Staatsbürgerschaft, einer der führenden Cartoonisten Englands, beeinflusst von David Low, ab 1941-53 fest angestellt beim „News Chronicle“, später beim „Daily Mirror“, arbeitet daneben für zahlreiche weitere Zeitungen, u.a. für den „Evening Standard“, die „Peterborough Column“ des „Daily Telegraph“, „World Film News“ (Serie: „Cockalorum“), „Daily Mail“ (Serie: „Funny Figures“), „Lilliput“

Im britischen Exil
Während des Krieges Anti-Nazi-Cartoons, später Cartoons zur Innenpolitik und zum Weltgeschehen, auch unpolitische, humoristische Karikaturen sowie anklagende Cartoons im sogenannten „Oxfam-Stil“, enorm produktiv und sehr erfolg-reich, nach außen perfekt akkulturiert, leidet jedoch unter permanenter Angst vor Kreativitätsverlust und Schlaflosigkeit, begeht 1966 Suizid
